Workplace Wellness: 5 Tips for Staying Healthy in the Workplace

Winter is coming (any GOT fans reading?).

While that means bonfires, hot chocolate drinking, warm sweaters, and holiday music – it also means the inevitable cold and flu season is coming (only made worse with the pandemic).

Now that many of us are back in the office and working amongst our coworkers again, it’s important not to panic but to be proactive in staying healthy in the workplace. If anything, the pandemic has brought to light how important it is for us to take care of our bodies and maintain sanitary environments. Let’s look a little further at how some simple solutions could keep us out of the doctors office and happily at work:

1. Stay hydrated

Hydration is key! Staying hydrated allows your body to circulate blood more freely, allowing your white blood cells to fight off viruses like the flu or colds more effectively. If you’re opposed to drinking water, consider alternative options like tea or drinks with electrolytes.

2. Wash Your Hands

It’s amazing how many things we touch in a day and don’t even realize it! While it may be hard to keep our hands to ourselves, an easy solution is to regularly wash your hands (especially before meals or before touching your face).

Make it a habit to keep hand sanitizer in your bag, at your desk, or in your car so that cleans hands are always an option and part of your regular routine.

3. Sleep Well

When the holiday season is upon us, a solid night of sleep is usually far and few between. There is so much to do as Q4 wraps up, so much cooking and baking to be done in the kitchen, and so many gifts to purchase and hide from loved ones.

While it’s important to check everything off of our to-do lists, it’s also important to set our days up for success and be kind to our bodies. Getting a full night’s sleep is crucial, as it allows your body and mind to rest and makes your body less vulnerable to illness.

4. Manage Stress

Maybe one of the reasons you aren’t getting a full night’s sleep is because you are too stressed out! There is a lot of pressure riding on many business professionals as the year closes out – a lot of deadlines, quotas, and expectations that must be met.

It is important to carve out time everyday to relax and de-stress. Practice taking deep breaths throughout the workday or if you work at a CommonGrounds (and we highly recommend that you do), take advantage of our stress-free relaxation rooms. Relaxation rooms provide a space just for you, to enjoy a comfortable chair and a moment alone.

5. Stay Active

An additional way to reduce stress and fight illness this winter, is to stay active! We know, we know – it’s hard to get motivated when it’s cold outside and no one wants to go running when it’s snowing outside.

However, there are more ways than one to stay active in the winter! Try fun indoor exercise activities – like yoga for example! As a CommonGrounds member, you have access to discounted programs at CorePower Yoga – both virtually and in-person so that you can workout anywhere or anytime you want.

Winter doesn’t have to be so blue if you don’t want it to be. There are so many ways to stay healthy this winter season and to not have to miss a day of work or fun because you are feeling under the weather. Stay safe, stay well and why you’re at it – check out how a membership at CommonGrounds can make you do all of those things: here!
