A Day in the Life – Workplace Manager Edition – Part 2
In continuation of our “Day in the Life” at CG series, we recruited Alycia Medina from CommonGrounds Fort Worth to walk us through her day as a Workplace Manager. Our workplace teams handle so many important responsibilities and are one of the significant keys to what makes CG a wonderful place to spend your day. So, see for yourself – check out all of the things that make up Alycia’s day in Fort Worth (hint: it includes lots of iced coffee) –

It’s important for me to start my mornings off slow and easy. Before I get up to make my iced coffee (a morning essential), I call my dogs up onto the bed to give them all the pets, love and attention. Only after those two things do I start getting ready for work! #priorities My first few sips of iced coffee (with extra ice of course, it is HOT in Texas) are spent looking at my calendar and getting prepared mentally for the workday ahead of me. After I’ve gotten ready – dressed, hair, makeup – I spend some extra time loving on my dogs (I really love how excited they get when I love on ‘em)! My twenty minute drive to work is mostly me singing and jamming out to early 2000’s songs (any other Mariah Carey fans?); nostalgic music always hits the spot and puts me in work-ready mood!
Opening up the space is so much more than it sounds – it’s my time to extend a friendly “good morning” and welcoming smile to members as they make their way into the pantry for coffee. Spa water (aka fruit infused water) is very popular in our Fort Worth site – some days, I know exactly what type of spa water to concoct and other times I illicit the help of a member. After the beverages are taken care of, I stock drinks in the fridge, make more drip coffee, empty the dishwasher and complete a walkthrough inside and around the building to make sure everything is in order.
Once I’m at my desk, I open up Rosie for the day! Rosie is our gorgeous La Cimbali espresso machine and I love her presence in our space, as making specialty coffee drinks is another chance for me to connect with members. After Rosie, I make my way through mail/package delivery, voicemails, missed calls and getting prepped for everything that’s on my calendar. I’m always pretty eager to prep for tours that are scheduled that day – I love getting the opportunity to show off our space!
Lunch always flies by and then I’m onto another interior and exterior site walkthrough. I always try to wave and smile at members when I pass by their offices. If one stops me to chat, I’ll chat-it-up! I love connecting with my members – community in our space is of the utmost importance and I love the opportunity to get to know everyone. After my walkthrough, it’s onto answering emails, following up with prospective members and completing any additional projects!
Another important task I do each day is market research. I need a strong grip my city, at all times. Fort Worth is the 12th largest city in the nation and changes are happening fast. People, businesses and headquarters are moving here every day, so being apprised of my market and how it’s shifting is one way I can stay at the forefront of potential opportunities for CommonGrounds.
My final tasks before closing up my laptop are to clean Rosie and make sure all emails and Slack messages have been read. Then, it’s back to the house to walk the dogs, finish up a home renovation project, cook dinner and spend some intentional time with my husband! I try to end the night with watching a little mindless tv or reading a horror/mystery book. Just another day in the life of a Workplace Manager in Fort Worth, Texas!
