5 Tips for Practicing Self-Care at Work

Another tough day at work? It’s common to feel burnt out or stressed after weeks and years of hard work. That’s why it is important to incorporate self-care into your daily routine in the workplace, to manage your wellness and feel more relaxed and focused during the day.

When you find yourself mentally and physically tense during the workday, it can be unbelievably hard to produce quality work. So when you’re feeling these symptoms, what can you do?

1. Change your environment. One of the many reasons coworking spaces make an ideal workspace is that you can work anywhere. If the sight of your desk is giving you anxiety, switch to a private meeting room or a sofa in one of the lounges. Some coworking spaces even have relaxation rooms with massage chairs that were designed for occasions such as this. Other locations have rooftop terraces or outdoor patios where you can soak up some sunshine and breathe in the scent of summer as you work.

A new setting might also inspire creativity or introduce you to someone new. It’s good to get out of your four walls and into somewhere new, giving your mind and body a chance to see things from a different perspective.

2. Take a break. If you are working straight through your day with no stops, you might not be working as productively as you could be. Your mind needs to rest and a short break will allow you time to refuel and recharge. Go for a walk outside, grab a filling snack, refill your coffee mug, have a chat with a coworker – whatever activity will allow you to take a few minutes away, rest, and come back refreshed.

3. Take pride in your workspace. Wouldn’t it be nice to sit down to a workspace that was tailored to you? If your office  allows it, put some effort into personalizing your space with some photographs of loved ones, artwork, or colorful office supplies. Have things on your desk that spark joy, so when you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, you have items that welcome positive feelings and push away negative ones.

4. Pack a lunch that you look forward to enjoying. The workday can feel long, so ensuring that something good is waiting for you at the halfway mark is a great way to practice self-care. Choosing ingredients that will make you feel energized and throw yourself a bone by packing a little treat for yourself!

5. Drink more water. This is the solution to most problems, right? Well it’s simple, easy, and effective when trying to add self-care into your workday routine!

6. Take your vacation days. Even if you don’t have a trip planed, make sure to use the vacation days your company offers. Many people like to use vacation days to run errands, spend time with family, or just have a day alone to relax. When you have a job that requires your full attention day in and day out, it can be hard to pry yourself away from it. But taking a few days off will help you regain focus and come back with a renewed attitude.

Self-care is important both in our personal lives and our professional lives. Showing up as your best self requires some effort, so don’t be afraid to take those necessary steps. Set boundaries and let yourself breathe so when you sit back down at your day, you’re ready.
